WiMAX vs LTE - never ending story (?)

Postautor: Pietrzyk » czw, 20 sierpnia 2009, 06:53

August 19, 2009:

Just weeks after Clearwire announced its market expansion in the US, the PR battle between WiMAX and LTE is heating up once again. Not surprisingly, Stockholm, Sweden based Ericsson, who holds an enormous stake in LTE, continues to dismiss the technology. In an interview with Gigaom last week, CTO Hakan Eriksson described WiMAX as "late to the game" and "not really a 4G technology." He went on to say that the sheer scale of LTE will allow it to always have a cost advantage over WiMAX.

Not to be outdone, US wireless operator Verizon announced that it had completed data "calls" using pre-standard LTE technology over 700MHz spectrum in Boston and Seattle, and was on track to launch LTE in 30 markets in 2010. Verizon reportedly has 10 cell sites up and running and is using the trials to better understand how to deploy its network.

While successful network trials are certainly a significant milestone, they are a far cry from having an operating commercial network. As Verizon continues LTE trials, Clearwire will continue to execute a nation wide build out to reach over 80 markets and cover 100 million people by the end of 2010. With WiMAX's ecosystem partners, including Chinese infrastructure provider Huawei, as well as Intel and others providing silicon for embedded devices, WiMAX should have no problem competing on costs. In the end, the consumers will benefit by having more choices, better performance and lower costs.
